Captain Murphy, the mystery rapper that most now assume is actually just Flying Lotus with a microphone, has released one of the strangest mixtapes in a while. It’s called Duality, and it’s available via the rapper’s website in the form of a 35-min video. Trippy visuals accompany the entire thing.
The video begins with a fairly funny premise— a guy talking about the allure of being a cult leader (and then attempting to show how to become a cult leader yourself). Step 1: Hypnotize.
This theme runs throughout much of the album/film as the songs, beats and videos blend and mesh together. This overarching premise is funny mostly because Captain Murphy has built up somewhat of a cult following around himself, amassing followers that have been attempting to discover his identity ever since that FlyLo/Earl collaboration came out.
This whole Captain Murphy schtick is undoubtedly an elaborate internet-rap experiment that reeks of Tyler, The Creator-like troll shenanigans. The man behind the invisible mask wants people to be guessing who he is, and so far that tactic has worked.
Yet unlike other joke-rap schemes, this music is still actually good. It’s not too far off from the Madvillain, Jaylib, insane collaborations of yesteryear (assuming this is some sort of collaboration and not just Flying Lotus doing EVERYTHING). But the production almost has to be Flying Lotus, so that alone makes it worth listening to.
Check out the album here and listen to another Captain Murphy song (one in which he hijacks TNGHT’s “Buggin’”) below.
