I [email protected]’ Loved This Show

I fuckin’ loved this show.

I was fortunate enough to catch the first stop on Mastodon’s headlining tour of the US last night at the Wiltern.  This tour is in support of their latest release, The Hunter, which is a 15-song masterpiece out on Reprise and in my opinion the best we’ve heard from them in years.  Mastodon did what was to be expected; played a tight, loud, heavy, unrelenting hour-long set to a packed and enthusiastic crowd.  Aside from watching a band like Mastodon, where it belongs, headlining a great venue, this is one of the most exciting hard rock/metal tours of the year, because of the incredible lineup that supports Mastodon.

The diversity of the openers (and the love that each saw last night from the crowd) is proof to me, how undiscriminating this genre’s fans are.  Before we get to hear Mastodon’s mix of sludge and Alt/Prog. metal infused with killer melodies, we get the ridiculously tight, never repeating time signatures of mathcore/hardcore/metal monsters, Dillinger Escape Plan.  These guys are nuts – musicianship is off the charts, vocals are from another planet, and they almost killed each other, while crossing paths, crowd surfing.

Despite my love for these long-standing titans of metal, this blog is about the little guy.   Red Fang is fuckin’ awesome.   These guys burn through a set of stoner rock/old school heavy metal, tight sludge, and do it really fuckin’ well.   They’re a bit more straightforward in their approach of messing with time than the other metal bands – they let the listener settle into a really comfortable dirge of 4/4 rock, before slipping into some uncountable metal.  These guys are on the road in support of their sophomore album, Murder The Mountains, which is currently out on Relapse.  The highlight of the show for me was hearing, Wires, a single off this album that is perfectly riffy, melodic, heavy and sludgy.  Not to mention, I’m pretty sure it’s responsible for the best music video of the year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQPfQvLIseA).  Very happy that this band is the first of an incredible lineup; don’t make the mistake of showing up late, if you’re going to see Mastadon this time around.

In short – I love this fuckin’ band and I love this tour – catch ‘em if you get the chance between now and the end of the year.
