Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba is no stranger to supergroup side projects— the singer/guitarist made a great album with F-minus’s Josh Steinbrick under the moniker Heavens and an enjoyable EP with Angels & Airwaves drummer Atom Willard under the title the HELL.
And though he’s worked with others, the musician is currently in the process of promoting his first full length solo effort— an album called Babylon that’s set to be released on May 8th. Although this is technically a Matt Skiba solo release, Babylon features musical accompaniment from the handpicked and newly-formed/named group the Sekrets. It’s surprising that the group didn’t choose a different name altogether a la Heavens or the HELL, as this might be the best group of musicians Skiba’s recorded with outside Alkaline Trio. Joining Skiba on the album and calling themselves the Sekrets are AFI bassist Hunter Burgan and My Chemical Romance drummer Jarrod Alexander.
While that combination of emotionally-charged punk musicians could exist as a hugely talented standalone group, the album is being released under Matt Skiba’s name because he “was solely responsible for the crafting of the songs.” Skiba’s influence is noticeable in “All Fall Down,” the first track released from the Babylon project. Skiba himself acknowledged the similarities of the new single and Alkaline Trio’s work in an interview with Spinner, where the song is currently available for streaming. The forthcoming LP should be enjoyable for fans of Alkaline Trio and Skiba in general.
