“There are two kinds of people in this world:
those who love Diego’s Umbrella and those who soon will.”

Some of the best musical discoveries are made by accident. You show up early to a show, mainly just to get a good spot for the headlining act. You don’t expect much from the opener, hoping they keep it short and sweet. Some are better than others, but occasionally you run into a gem that has somehow eluded you along your musical travels…

And in the case of Diego’s Umbrella, that gem was one humongous gypsy-rocking diamond.

Diego’s Umbrella are the resident Gypsy Rockers of San Francisco. Known for their high-energy shows, they tightly blend their special brand of rock with klezmer, flamenco and punk rock influences, making for one of the most original sounds you will ever hear.

Today marks a monumental day in the band’s history, as their much anticipated release, ‘Proper Cowboy’, is available worldwide! And thanks to the fine folks at Ninth Street Opus, we have it streaming on Earbits!

I had a chance to grab a copy of the record at a recent show, and although I knew every song title on the CD jacket, I had never heard these songs before – not like this. The musicianship, the production, the performances – all amazing. The Rondo Brothers out of San Francisco produced, and their influence can be felt throughout the album. What ‘Proper Cowboy’ brings to the table is an “edge” that causes it to stand out from prior D.U. efforts. This album, for lack of a better term, has balls. Plain and simple.

The first track is a good indication of the musical ass-kicking you are in for when you pop this disc into your player. “Thrash Mexican Budapest” has long been a live fan-favorite, but this recording takes the song and super-charges it with an electronic vibe, providing even more of a reason to dance, if you can believe that. The build at the end will have even the most jaded listeners ready to boogie out of their desk-chair. A “must listen” track.

‘Proper Cowboy’ also features a fantastic version of the Sonny and Cher classic, “A Cowboy’s Work Is Never Done”. This track sounds like something straight out of a Quentin Tarantino movie-shoot. With a nasty swagger, the percussion and vocals rise to the top, making for an incredibly accurate, yet cutting edge rendition of a classic tune.

“Bulletproof Shine”, featuring Angelo Moore of Fishbone, is another stand-out track. Aside from the obvious awesomeness of anything associated with Fishbone, this song will blow you away. It screams Diego’s Umbrella. I dare you, try to get through the chorus without clapping along. You can’t, it’s physically impossible.

From top to bottom, this is an outstanding album. If you haven’t accepted Diego’s Umbrella as your musical savior, do yourself a favor, and pick up ‘Proper Cowboy’ today. Original, intelligent music that sets its own boundaries. My favorite album of the year so far, and I have a feeling it will hold that spot for a long time to come.
