If a handful of riots can erupt simply because a hockey team loses the Stanley Cup, it doesn’t seem out of the question that angry anarchists would rally against the fact that a corporate sponsor is now behind a beloved punk rock music festival.  However, it seems as if the fact that Red Bull is sponsoring Chicago’s (Red Bull) Riot Fest is, to most people, not a big deal.  In fact, monetary support will probably make the festival much better without stifling the DIY spirit too much.  Like Vans with the Warped Tour, Red Bull’s sponsorship is undeniably a great and useful idea for both parties.

The lineup for the two installments of this year’s festival, Riot Fest Chicago and Riot Fest East, were announced today.  Headliners in the festival’s original city (Chicago) include Weezer, Social Distortion, X, Youth of Today, and Suicide Machines.  A “major headline announcement” is also set to take place on June 24th, the same day that tickets become available.  The festival will take place at various venues in the city from October 5th through the 9th.

Riot Fest East will take place in Philadelphia, PA on September 24th and will feature a similar, yet slimmer, lineup.  Descendents, Dead Milkmen, X, Plow United, Hot Water Music and Naked Raygun top that bill.

For fans of punk and other forms of unafraid rock music, Riot Fest will be a great way to keep the summer festival momentum going throughout the fall.  More information can be found on the festival website.
