I love my job. Not many people can say that. Why do I love it, you ask? I do nothing but listen to Earbits all day, which provides me some serious time to peruse the up and coming music that we are constantly adding. From Metal to Jazz, and everything in between, I am ever-impressed by the catalog that our music department is building. Frankly, it’s getting ridiculous.

What does this mean to you?

In a couple weeks I’ll be sitting on a panel at the NARM conference discussing why most music startups fail.  Many of the startups we’ll talk about are distribution services that help artists sell their music and other goods.  A lot of them haven’t failed, per se, but they’ve failed to achieve scale.  A lot of people believe that’s a sign of the size of the independent market, but it’s not.  The reason these companies haven’t scaled isn’t because there is no market for their products, it’s because 99% of artists have no effective marketing solutions.

Really Unofficial Guide to SXSW

Earbits is very happy to announce our streaming music ‘Really Unofficial Guide to SXSW’!

We are sure that you’re familiar with South By Southwest – one of the most infamous music conferences in the world, held annually in Austin, Texas. With live music all day, every day in dozens of venues throughout the city, SXSW is a dream destination for any music fan. But it can also turn into a line-standing, door-begging disaster quite quickly if you don’t plan ahead.

Today we’re starting a one-week spotlight of one of our artists on her way up, Jesse Thomas, who has graced us with an exclusive release of her new single, Sidewalk Ends, off of her forthcoming album, War Dancer (Tuesday, Feb 14th – PRE-ORDER NOW!).  While we love Jesse, this blog post isn’t about that.  Instead, I want to show a little love to the people behind the artists; in Jesse’s case, independent label, Red Parade, led by Jim Roach.

Originally from Covington, Kentucky, Jesse Thomas packed up and headed west to Los Angeles in 2008. She had little more than her car and a dream…

To become an actress.

Fast-forward to 2012, and Jesse is gearing up for the Valentine’s Day release of her debut full-length album on Red Parade Music, ‘War Dancer’. She has been featured in the “New and Noteworthy” section, as well as the “Indie Spotlight” on iTunes. “You I Want”, off of her Hazel EP, was featured by Starbuck’s as their “Pick of the Week”, both nationally as well as in Canada. She had another song used on Teen Nick’s “Degrassi”, and recently opened for John Mayer (and as a result, made a video about having his baby).

If you have never heard Jesse Thomas sing before, you are in for a real treat. Originally from Covington, Kentucky, Jesse moved west to Los Angeles without knowing a soul, and began playing  her songs for the masses. Flash forward to 2011, she has been featured on iTunes “New and Noteworthy” as well as being chosen for the Starbuck’s “Pick of the Week”. Look for her new record, dropping soon, and enjoy a look into the mind of one of the area’s premier songwriters – and be sure not to miss an exclusive performance of a new track from her upcoming album – it is FANTASTIC.  Have fun!
