Wall of AlbumsEarbits is well on its way.  With our site design complete, our beta in development under the watchful eye of Benjamin Bryant, and some funding in the bank, things are looking very strong for our upcoming launch.

To top it all off, Yotam is kicking ass recruiting amazing artists across our first four genres – jazz, rock, hard rock, and electronic dance music.  We have over 170 artists with a combined 220 albums of great music and we’re getting more everyday.  If you know of any awesome artists that should be playing on our site, please let us know.

To give you an example of the high quality artists we’re working with, in jazz we have Dave Samuels, winner of several Grammys and voted “Best Vibes Player” in both Jazziz and Modern Drummer magazines.  We’ll also be featuring two time Grammy Award-Winning violinist and long time member of Turtle Island Quartet, Mads Tolling.  In rock, we’ve got Shaimus, a fantastic group of songwriters with music featured in Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and licensed to MTV.  And, leaning toward the harder side of rock, we have bands like Ironweed from Small Stone Records, who were featured at SXSW.

Again, if you have some favorite, independent bands that you think would be a great addition to earbits, please let us know, or ask them to contact yotam@earbits.com.

Champian FultonThis is my first CD review for earbits.  I had to choose from over 40 great albums that have quickly piled up on my desk.  It is amazing how many great “undiscovered” artists are out there and it’s our mission at earbits to connect these high quality artists with their target audience.

Choosing which album to review from the pool of greats was an easy task.  Champian Fulton is an incredible vocalist and piano player.  It took me two seconds to fall in love with her voice.  It is so sincere and real.  On this album, The Breeze and I, Champian is joined by Neal Miner on bass, and Fukushi Tainaka on drums.

Her ability on the piano is incredible.  If it wasn’t for the smiling picture of a young lady on the front of the album, I would have easily mistaken her playing with one of the greats, such as Red Garland.  She swings hard and has a great melodic approach to soloing.  Her chops are impressive and well balanced with great musicality. The trio as a whole sounds like a group that has been playing together for a very long time.  Their playing is tight together, and they constantly play off each other’s ideas.

Champian has successfully done a challenging task.  She created an album that honors the tradition of Bebop, yet still sounds contemporary and fresh.  This makes it appealing to both younger jazz lovers, and the seasoned crowed.

I’ll keep it short – Champian Fulton’s The Breeze and I is a fun, easy listening, yet sophisticated enough jazz album.   Don’t take my word for it.  Listen to samples of the album here.

And remember, if you like what you hear, buy it!  Support independent artists.

Damian ErskineThis is the first of many album and song reviews to come.  Some will be by me, others by our cofounder and EVP of Music, Yotam Rosenbaum.  Eventually, we’ll get others to contribute in the future as well.  I think you’ll notice a stark difference in the reviews that come from me and those from Yotam.  I am easily impressed, not very musically educated, and into completely different music – but that ought to make this fun.

Today’s review is of “So To Speak” by Damian Erskine.  For more on Damian, check out his great website:

www.damianerskine.com

I popped in “So To Speak” and immediately liked what I heard.  You’ll find over the course of my reviews that I prefer slightly more tense music, typically with a lot of complex and aggressive percussion.  Although So To Speak isn’t up there with the metal albums you’ll hear my listening to, track number one, Inside Out, was definitely a good lead-in for a guy like me.  The rhythms are instantly complex, and by 3:30 the song has worked its way into a strong, less-than-subtle drum solo.

But, let’s not dwell on drums…

In addition to composing all of the tracks on “So To Speak”, Damian Erskine is the bass player on the album and leaves no room for debate as to why it’s his album.  There is no denying his chops; the syncopated lines are fun to follow and keep your head moving constantly.  Just as you’re about to fall out of your seat, he brings in Ramsey Embick on piano to relieve the tension, shifting the entire feel of the song into something relaxing and easy on the soul.  For those of you interested in hearing Damian at his finest, there is a killing solo on Track 4, American Gyro.

The album continues in this manner – smooth flowing areas of relief mixed with fun and intriguing opportunities to really get your mind worked up.  Overall, I found it to be a lot of fun to listen to and a great album to break our review cherry.

You’ll hear Damian Erskine and other great artists when earbits launches this summer.  Until then, feel free to check out Damian’s website and contact us for more information or to recommend another artist.  Thanks, Damian!
