We made a big announcement this weekend, about having raised a bit of money that should help us turn Earbits into the world’s next big internet radio company.  In the announcement, we likened ourselves to “Payola 2.0”.  This wasn’t an accident.  Calling ourselves Payola 2.0 is simply the easiest way to quickly describe our business to people familiar with the term.  As expected, there were a couple of negative comments and one well-written blog post about the problems with payola.  It gave us a great opportunity to talk about our vision, and I think convert a few skeptics.  It seemed like a good idea to post the same information here.

I grew up in Sacramento listening to 93 Rock, which changed about midway through my hometown life to 98 Rock – same music, different spot on the dial.  93 Rock played Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, AC/DC, Skid Row, Poison, and the list goes on.  Now, to some extent, I imagine that most rock stations played this music then, but I guess what’s important to note is that 93 Rock leaned toward the heavier side of rock – playing things like Metallica and Megadeth far more often than Journey, for example, and not just the singles either.
