Ever since founding Def Jam Records from his NYU dorm room and catapulting the careers of the hip-hop, punk and heavy metal greats (with a few pop stars sprinkled in), Rick Rubin has been one of the most well-known producers in the music industry.  Working in a role that typically goes unrecognized in the realm of music creation, Rubin and his beard, his monk-like philosophy and his penchant for going barefoot have made him an icon in his own right.

The lineup for Lollapalooza 2012 was released on Wednesday, and it features a variety of different acts.  It’s not quite up to par with last year’s 20th anniversary lineup, but that would’ve been a tough task for Perry and co.  Here are some thoughts on this year’s lineup:

Red Hot Chili Peppers seem like an obvious, fitting choice for headliners due to the festival’s roots in 90s alternative rock culture.  But without guitar virtuoso John Frusciante, the group’s similar headlining performance from just a few years ago is going to be tough to top.

David Guetta— Nothing But The Beat

House producer David Guetta may be the man behind nothing but the beat, but guest verses from rappers like Nicki Minaj, will.i.am, Lil’ Wayne and more will make this an album filled with club and radio-ready songs.

Cobra Starship— Night Shades

Night Shades is the fourth album Cobra Starship, released through the Decaydance label.  Expect pop/dance radio hits.
