Nardwuar’s hardworking, probably obsessive research revealed that Kendrick Lamar hooked up with Dr. Dre via Tech N9ne sometime prior to this year’s SXSW. Since that announcement, internet fans have been waiting to hear the collaboration in the same manner they’ve been waiting for Detox— hopeful, but not necessarily eager. Lamar stopped by L.A.’s Power 106 radio show on Monday morning in order to prove the naysayers wrong, debuting a song that features the sporadically-productive Dr. Dre.
It’s gotta be an honor for Compton’s Young Savior to record a song with one of the city’s Legends, but it’s even more of an honor that the elder one’s taking notes from the kid. “The Recipe” finds Dre almost full-on biting Lamar’s style, rapping like gangsta rap was never a thing that happened in South Central Los Angeles. Scoop Deville produced the Section.80-sounding beat, a style that fits Lamar’s flow much more closely than it fits Dre’s, so I’m gonna give the Doctor the benefit of the doubt and guess that’s why his style switched up so much.
“The Recipe” consists of Lamar and Dre talking about the main thing they have in common— L.A. (or, as the two repeatedly describe it, the city of “women, weed and weather”). I was gonna say it’s almost laughable that Lamar’s supposedly going to appear on Detox (the rapper would have been unknown if the album was actually released on schedule), but this collaboration is good and I know that the famously perfectionistic Doctor will make sure whatever appears on his album will be even better.
